A book review: Frankenstein (M. Shelley)

creato da Fabrizio Rota ultima modifica 26/08/2011 18:18

Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, is a book full of Gothic elements and it is an early example of science fiction, inspired by scientific progress. It is the story of a man who pretends to create a man, like God, but his creature and his ambition will be his own end.
The book is surely interesting and easy-reading and it makes us reflect about scientific progress, unlimited ambition and prejudices.
I liked it very much and I suggest that you should read it.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in my opinion is a big masterpiece. I liked it very much because the story is simply genial and fantastic. I particularly liked the figure of the monster, because actually he's not bad, and sometimes you feel tenderness for him.
Mary Shelley lost her mother early in her life, and she also lost her child; this two events are hidden in Victor's and in the creature's story. I liked the incredible landscapes, too, and the way the story is told. My favourite scene is the one about the creation of the monster. A strong advice for everyone: you must read this novel!

Frankenstein is considered the first science fiction story.
Written in 1816 by a woman, Mary Shelley, it’s the story of an ambitious scientist, who finding knowledge and wisdom, destroys his life.
“He puts together the thing”, writes Mary Shelley, but really this creature feels emotions and lives his life like other people do.
There’s the current issue of the “outcast”, because of his horrible appearance people refuse and hate the monster. This hate makes the creature bad, envious, he receives love and affection neither from his creator nor from his father.

The author of Frankenstein is Mary Shelley. It was an immediate success.

The main character is Victor Frankenstein, an ambitious scientist who wishes to make great discoveries. He gives birth to a terrible creature, “the being”.
The novel is full of mystery and terror. Is the creature bad or is it capable of feelings? In the book there are Gothic elements like the monster and the choice of the laboratory.

Mary Shelley’s story of  Frankenstein is a Gothic novel and a science fiction novel too. It is a story full of passion, horror and mystery which can arise in the reader feelings of disgust but of pity, too. Frankenstein is an ambitious man who creates a creature, but doesn’t respect the duty that he has towards him. The creature, alone in the world, wants to take his revenge because the misery makes him evil. He does incredible and cruel things to get his revenge but at the end…
Frankenstein is a story that can make the reader feel sad and that can convey an important message: “Don’t be too ambitious in your life, because it can be
dangerous”.
